A storm brews over the Rocky Mountains
We strive to make blog posts worthy of our audience. We expect them to be more than just diary entries of where we’ve been and what we’ve done. Instead, we try to craft stories that are as interesting in the telling as they are in the doing. Sometimes we succeed and other times we don’t. But the effort usually requires reflection; it often requires research; it always requires time.
Careful observers may have noticed that our writing trails our travels. In truth, the blog is about a month or so behind us. I don’t expect it will ever catch up. We simply need that time to make each entry a worthwhile read. Normally that hasn’t presented much of a problem, aside from some mild confusion about why there isn’t more Rocky Mountain snow at this time of year.
More recently, though, people who know that we’re about to embark on a two month backpacking trip through Central America have asked whether they’ll be able to follow our whereabouts on EverywhereOnce. The answer is no, not in real time, anyway. Like all of our posts, dispatches from Central America will be delayed by about a month or so.
What I can do is make timely updates on my Facebook page. As we travel through Central America I’ll try to write short entries about where we are, without stealing too much thunder from future blog posts. Meanwhile, the blog will continue on its own timeline, which hopefully won’t be too confusing for folks.
What you see above is the rough itinerary we hope to complete over a period of two months. In many ways this trip is an experiment for us. We’ve never been gone for so long, while taking so little. We’ve never really made our own way through developing countries before. And we’ve never had to manage a freelance business out of a backpack. What we discover on this trip will likely shape our travel ambitions going forward. It should make for interesting reading.

We are leaving the RV behind. Sadly, both our cats passed away within the last two years. We chose to get an RV so they could come with us, but they had other ideas, I guess.

I’m interested to hear what you think, Belize and Honduras were my least favourite in Central America although I must admit I didn’t spend much time there.
If you do have extra time, Nicaragua was by far my favourite.

We’re really only dipping into Honduras to check out Copan Ruinis. I’m a bit surprised to hear that you found Belize to be a dud. It seems great for beaches and water activities. I expect most of our time to be spent in Guatemala, though. Check back and we’ll surely let you know what we thought.

IN New Zealand and Australian for the past 2 years, my daughter and son-in-law carry a mobile gps upload unit that sends an email to stored addresses. It provides a link to the location where they are using google maps. That includes some stock photos. It also permits them to write one line about weather/animals/hiking/whatever.

Whoa! So your daughter and son-in-law have been Lo-Jacked? LOL. That is probably what my iPhone is doing to me, but at least in their case they signed up for it.

I envy you your journey. Sounds like a great ride and it’s been an excellent read.
Hope you’re able to check out Costa Rica. There’s much to recommend there: active volcanoes, cloud and rain forests, wonderful folks who live there both on the east and west coasts. We spent a week there and wish we’d had more time.

Costa Rica sounds amazing, but we’re not getting there this trip. We thought about doing a more ambitious route that got us all through C.A., but we decided to just do the Northern area this time. Something to look forward to.
