Judging from comments, my readers are a well traveled lot. I’d like to draw on that experience in trying to piece together the next leg of our RVing route. When we return from Central America, we’ll spend a couple weeks in Houston; exploring the city and catching up on all the chores we’ve been neglecting the past two months. After that, we’ll hit Austin, maybe Big Bend, and then, well, we don’t really know.
You can see from the map were we’ve been, and where we haven’t. We’re planning on charting a northerly course up AZ/NM, CO/UT and WY over the spring and summer. I know there is a ton to see in that region of the country but we haven’t researched anything yet, so suggestions are welcome. The biggest challenge I’m seeing is finding interesting stops between Austin and Arizona (we’ve already covered a bunch of good stuff in NM). Maybe I just have to accept the fact that a couple of long driving days are in my future.
Well crowd, what do you think?

My recommendations, mostly National Parks….
Arizona – Petrified Forest, Saguaro, Organ Pipe Cactus, Grand Canyon National Parks
Utah – Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, Arches, Capital Reef National Parks and of course Moab
You mentioned Big Bend as well, I’d recommend that one also!
If you ever get to Yuma, AZ, you can look up my mom and step-Dad. They’ve been full time RVers for over 10 years. That’s their home base during the winter months.

At some point there was a promise to hit the great Northwest. We have the Puget Sound and volcanoes, glaciers, orcas, and even some sunshine every now and then.

Go to Chinle and Canyon de Chelly in arizona… it’s absolutely magical! AND — if you’re feeling really bold with the RV, take the Million Dollar Highway from Silverton to Ouray in Colorado — it’s incredible but totally scary to drive! The high road from Taos to Santa Fe through Chimayo is amazing — plus, I love the road further up through San Luis ..And take the pass over to Westcliffe, Colorado — that’s breathtaking. Oooh, how FUN!

Hi Betty, thanks for the input. Chinle and the Million Dollar Highway will work really well I think. We did Taos and Santa Fe on our trip south last year and you’re right, it’s beautiful country.

You’ve completely excluded the west coast! Seattle, Portland, Pacific Coast Highway, Hollywood, La Brea Tar Pits, Big Sur, The Golden Gate Bridge, Santa Barbara, Baja California, Torrey Pines, The Redwood Forest, Catalina Island…. There’s a lot of fantastic scenery there as well as countless points of interest!

We’re definitely stopping in Park City and Salt Lake City. I just don’t know yet whether we’ll get there on our trip North this summer or catch it on our way back south in the Fall. So much to see. So little time.

I live in West Texas and we’ve tried to explore things around here a bit over the last years. You’d have to drive quite a ways up North, but one of my favorite things was an afternoon with a jeep tour in Palo Duro canyon, eating steak at the Big Texan, and photo opps at the Cadillac Ranch (all three close to Amarillo and post are on my blog). There are amazing caverns in Texas. Search for Sonora Caverns on Google (my post isn’t up yet). I like both Austin and San Antonio, but prefer smaller cities like Fredricksburg (kind of German-ish with a lot of cute stores and an amazing cheese store). Looks like you’ve already done stops in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Otherwise I would have recommended those two as well. There is a metero crater in Arizona that’s kind of cool if you haven’t been there yet.

Very good suggestions. Sonora Caverns looks right up our alley . . . a spelunking tour with a 50 foot repel into “Devils Pit” . . . how can we possibly pass that up????

One possible West TX stop is Balmorhea State Park, an oasis in the desert just off I-10 north of Ft Davis. You might also want to check out the small, isolated town of Marfa, TX and the remarkable art and literary community thriving in the middle of nowhere.
