Where the Sun Don’t Shine

Cleaved by the Gunnison River over the course of two million years, the Black Canyon in Western Colorado is so deep and narrow that some areas rarely see sunlight. So forbidding are its chasm walls that no people ever occupied the gorge. Even today, access to the river and lower sections of the canyon are reserved for skilled watermen and climbers. Being neither, we happily kept to the miles of hiking trails along Canyon’s rim.

Glad I stumbled on your blog! Feels like a lousy terrarium here in Tampa Fla. (for months now of course!) – so your stories & views bring relief! (and envy, of course!)

A female friend and school co-worker of mine came upon this canyon during our R/T drive from NYC, I think in ’84… she had friends in Ouray & we did much of what you’re now seeing! We somehow got to the bottom of this Cy. & had a boat ride/tour, where they pointed out the rail track that was “somehow” built WAY down below! I have pics from the top with bold spotted squirrels eating from my hand! What a find! Thanks for refreshing me! – Tom B

Thanks for liking my blog so I could find my way to yours. How inspirational! I love that you have the cats with you. Our ability to pick up and go is somewhat altered by having two little ones and a 14-year-old cat, but wanderlust remains. Canyon hiking is out for now, so I’ll enjoy following along…
