Canyonlands National Park (also near Moab, UT) is so large that it is separated into three distinct land districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles and the Maze. No road directly connects these areas and travel between them can take up to six hours by car. During our time in Moab, we only explored Island of the Sky, which is really just the tip of the iceberg. We’ll have to make a return trip to see the other two thirds of this wonderful park.
While here, we weren’t surprised to find magnificent buttes (above) and canyons (below).
What we didn’t really expect to find here is one of the area’s best arches instead of in neighboring Arches National Park.
Stunning photos. Thanks as always for sharing!

It was probably late morning, but the clouds were casting these wonderfull shadows that really filtered the light nicely.

We visited both Arches and Canyonlands a couple of years back (pre-blogging days). We would spend weeks in this area and probably fill up an 8GB photo memory card! I recognized many of the vista that you featured. A few weeks back, when flying to CA, the plane went over the Grand Junction & Moab areas from my window. I followed the Green and Colorado rivers which come together to form Islands in the Sky.

I can certainly see spending weeks in the area and having no problem filling a memory card of almost any size. So much to see and to photograph.
