How does any great project come to fruition?
It occurred to us that any large project, whether working toward a life on the road or the smaller ambition of starting a “How To” section for this blog, requires many of the same basic things. As we thought about the new section we’re launching today, we wondered if we had the resources, the time, the energy and the expertise to make the effort a success. These are the same issues we agonized over year after year as we worked toward our goal of fulltime travel.
As we pondered these issues again we realized they were secondary to a bigger question – were we really committed to the project? Without commitment, nothing else matters. The single step undertaken never becomes a great journey; just a failed attempt. Whether we can marshal the resources or the expertise is completely irrelevant if we lack the desire to see the endeavor through to its conclusion. The question “can we do it?” is a poor substitute for the more pertinent and pointed question “how bad do we want it?” Often times the first question is answered by the second.

The “How To” section we’re starting today, which now has a dedicated menu at the top of the page, will supplement the travel experiences we’ve always shared with more practical articles addressing the many questions we get regarding how we got where we are. We plan to cover everything from how to think about money to how to drive an RV to how to select a travel backpack. We’ll write about any topic we think will help you get on the road, whether for a week or for forever. We’ll answer the questions you’re asking and, if we’re doing our jobs well, some you haven’t thought of yet.
The mission we’ve given ourselves is to help our readers map the path to a life of fulltime travel. We’re committed to the project. Are you?

Usually it’s a simple matter of just doing it. We have met many people who say “I wish I could do that” or “you are so lucky to be doing that”. It’s got nothing to do with luck, it’s just a decision to change our lifestyle. And for those who wish they could be doing it they usually could. But most people aren’t willing to give up the “security” of owning a home, or the “security” of their pension that they are working towards.
So, they wait until they retire, and then one of them dies early.
We simply made the decision to do it while we could, because you never know when your time is up.

We agree. Sacrifice, determination and a willingness to take risks to achieve the life you want are all more important than luck. With the launch of this “How To” section, our blog will start to break down in two distinct ways: The travel stories we usually write fall under the category of “Inspiration” while the forthcoming “How To” posts will be more like “Perspiration.” More than luck, hard work and desire tend to get you where you want to go.

Travel planning and preparation is a lot more perspiration than inspiration! Good concept. We often start our plans a year in advance, both to comb through many travel resources, history and literature from the region, and savings. I’ll back for both inspiration and perspiration suggestions.

My partner and I talk about this all the time. We both had always had plans to break free from the “security” that others desired but it wasn’t until we met each other that we started putting a plan in place. We had met our travel partners within each other. Now, we are on a 5 year plan to clear student loan debt (UUUGGH!) and save enough money to ride our bicycles indefinitely around the world for as long as we can and then work our way through the rest of it. We don’t particularly plan to “come back” once we get started. It DOES take dedication and a re-prioritizing of what is important to you. We can’t wait for 2015.

My wife and I are looking to do the same thing. We love to travel, and would like to travel all over the world. We own a travel company, and we have plans to create affordable travel, not only for ourselves but for others too. Even to the point of not having to pay money out of our own pockets. First things first. You have to have a plan. Dream big, and live out your dream. Thanks for the blog post. I look forward to more posts.
