Everywhere we turn, a waterfall. Here, right in the middle of town, a 150 foot cascade. I guess the Finger Lake’s region in New York is getting us ready for the Main Event: next stop Niagara Falls.
When we go hiking we expect there to be a payoff. We don’t go to stroll around the woods, commune with nature, or ‘find ourselves.’ We want to be rewarded for our efforts. It’s true the internet didn’t revolutionize everything. Pets.com never delivered, well, whatever it was that it tried to deliver. In other areas, though, the internet has proven as transformative as the initial hype suggested. Newspapers struggle to cope with free content, a technology company now dominates music sales, and large book sellers are liquidating because they can’t compete with something called ‘Kindle.’ In recent years the web’s networking properties have also allowed markets to form for things that were previously unmarketable; like empty rooms and houses. Is New York in the same league with Paris and Rome as a great tourist destination? I never thought so. I lived in and around the city for the better part of two decades. I love New York for all of its opportunities and conveniences. It’s a fantastic place to live. But let’s face it, it’s ugly.
