USS Midway

USS Midway

Commissioned just after the end of World War II, the USS Midway claimed bragging rights as the largest ship in the world for roughly a decade. Its 47 years of duty also makes it the longest serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century.

Over its long career, the Midway saw action in Vietnam and was the flagship during Operation Desert Storm. The radar and other screens in her Tactical Flag Command Center still display the activities during the early hours of that Persian Gulf War.

Today the Midway serves a much calmer mission as a downtown San Diego museum.

I always thought aircraft carriers were the most fascinating thing! We will visit there one day.

I saw the play South Pacific on the deck one evening several years ago, but need to go back to check out the rest of the ship/museum.

We spent a couple of hours touring the Midway a five years ago when in San Diege. We could have spent the day (but were accomodating our traveling companions’ attention spans). We found they retired Navy personnel, many who had served on the Midway, where we stationed around the flight deck to talk with visitors, to be easily engaged and interested in telling their stories. It will be on our list of attractions to return to on our own some day.
